Oregon House OK's Hatfield statue in U.S. Capitol, bill goes to the Senate

KTVZ.COM, SALEM, Ore. (AP) — The Oregon House has again voted to pull a statue of Oregon pioneer Jason Lee from a prominent place in the U.S. Capitol and replace it with one of Mark Hatfield. ✧ Lee, a 19th century missionary and founder of the school that became Willamette University, is one of Oregon's two statues in the halls of Congress. ✧ Hatfield supporters say it's time to showcase a new era of Oregon history represented by the Oregon governor and Republican U.S. senator who died in 2011. ✧ They revived the measure after a similar bill passed the House last year, but died in a Senate committee. ✧ The House voted Friday to require the Oregon Historical Society to raise money for a Hatfield statue. Lee's statue would return to Salem. ✧ The measure goes to the Senate.
