On this day in 1960, President Dwight Eisenhower signed into law the 1960 Civil Rights Act, which strengthened provisions of the Republican Party's 1957 Civil Rights Act. The 1960 legislation was written by Senate Minority Leader Everett Dirksen (R-IL). Prior to its passage, 18 Democrat Senators filibustered against the bill for 125 hours, the longest filibuster in U.S. Senate history.
