'Mourning in America' video from Citizens for the Republic

Related text: In 1984, the Reagan reelection campaign set the standard for modern political advertising with its fabled "Morning in America" series, which included one of the greatest political ads of all time -- "Better, Prouder, Stronger." The ad captured the zeitgeist -- America under President Reagan was coming back, full of optimism and confidence in the future.

Today, the zeitgeist is exactly the opposite. Americans are worried about their future, and about a government determined to implement policies that just don't work. But like its predecessor, "Mourning in America" offers a new hope -- if we can just get our government to return to time-tested policies that can spark a rebirth of liberty. Read More......

A Republican President issued the Emancipation Proclamation

"On this day in 1862, President Abraham Lincoln (R-IL) issued the Emancipation Proclamation. Effective at yearend, all slaves in Confederate-controlled territory would be "forever free." ∴ Ill-informed critics of the first Republican President Lincoln fault the Emancipation Proclamation for only freeing slaves in areas not yet under the control of the U.S. government, but -- because of the Democratic Party's resolute defense of slavery -- the federal government had the necessary authority only over so-called "property" of the rebels. ∴ Within two years, the Republican-controlled 38th Congress followed up this great advance by enacting the 13th Amendment, banning slavery throughout the nation."

Asteroids, NASA and budget cuts

- BIG THINK, 9/10/2010 by Michio Kaku - Two Asteroids Buzzed the Earth This Week [9/5] --Should We Be Afraid?
- BIG THINK, 9/7-8/2010 by Michio Kaku - NASA Is Running Out of Money to Monitor Earth-Destroying Asteroids (Part 1 of 2) and (Part 2 of 2)

Plans for sending humans to visit an asteroid are heating up, with at least one company already scoping out the technological essentials for a deep space expedition within a decade, given the go-ahead. ∴ The asteroid space trek is seen as both scientifically valuable and as a dress rehearsal for a Mars mission, NASA officials have said. It could also hone ideas for planetary defense to guard Earth from a messy head-on clash with a space rock. ∴ Launching a manned asteroid mission by 2025 is NASA's new goal set by President Barack Obama, who announced the plan in April. The deep space mission would serve as a stepping stone to a crewed mission to Mars in the mid-2030s, he said. ∴ Lockheed Martin, which has been building NASA's Orion space capsule to replace the agency's retiring shuttle fleet, has already completed a study on how an asteroid mission might work. AT: ObamaCare's Fatal Flaw?

AMERICAN THINKER, 9/13/2010 by Louis Case -Scott Brown's election could be the most significant turning point in the whole ObamaCare fiasco. And not because it was an "expression of the will of the people" because, as we've learned, that doesn't matter to our Washington overlords. No, Brown's election has trapped Congress in its own sloppy arrogance. ∴ In a September 8th appearance on Greta Van Sustern's On The Record, Virginia's Attorney General, Ken Cuccinelli, explained the significance of the Brown victory in the context of Virginia's lawsuit to overturn ObamaCare. George Will: Clunker School of Economics

PATRIOT POST, 9/12/2010 by George Will - WASHINGTON: Looking back with pride, the British are commemorating the 70th anniversary of the Battle of Britain, when Churchill said of the pilots fighting the Luftwaffe: Never "was so much owed by so many to so few." Looking ahead with trepidation, Americas are thinking: Never have so many of us owed so much. ∴ Actually, they owed slightly more when the recession began, when household consumer debt was $2.6 trillion. The painful but necessary process of deleveraging is proceeding slowly: Such debt has been reduced only to $2.4 trillion. Add to that the facts that the recession has reduced household wealth by $10 trillion, and that only 25 percent of Americans expect their incomes to improve next year. So they are not spending, and companies, having given the economy a temporary boost last year by rebuilding inventories, are worried. Hence, rather than hiring, companies are sitting on cash reserves much larger than the size of last year's $862 billion stimulus. Read more at Patriot Post... Read More......

Moving Mosque Could Ignite Violence

FOX NEWS, 9/9/2010 - On Wednesday (9/8/2010), Imam Feisal Abdul Rauf, the imam behind a proposed Islamic community center and mosque near ground zero, spoke to guest host Soledad O'Brien during a live broadcast of Larry King Live and cautioned that moving the facility could cause a violent backlash from Muslim extremists and endanger national security. ∴ Imam Feisal Abdul Rauf told CNN that the discourse surrounding the center has become so politicized that moving it could strengthen the ability of extremists abroad to recruit and wage attacks against Americans, including troops fighting in the Middle East. ∴ "The headlines in the Muslim world will be that Islam is under attack," he said, but he added that he was open to the idea of moving the planned location of the center, currently two blocks north of the World Trade Center site. ∴ "But if you don't do this right, anger will explode in the Muslim world," he later said, predicting that the reaction could be more furious than the eruption of violence following the 2005 publication of Danish cartoons of the Prophet Muhammad. ∴ Opponents say the center, which would include a Sept. 11 memorial and a Muslim prayer space, should be moved farther away from where Islamic extremists destroyed the World Trade Center and killed nearly 2,800 people. Supporters say religious freedom should be protected. Read more at Fox...

September 11, 2006 – Dedication of the memorial “To the Struggle Against World Terrorism”

Time cures everything, but there are things we cannot and must not forget. Standing more than 100 feet tall, “To the Struggle Against World Terrorism” honors victims of 9/11 and the 1993 World Trade Center bombings and serves a symbol of solidarity in the fight against world terrorism. Created by Russian sculptor Zurab Tsereteli, the memorial was a gift from the Russian people.

The Memorial was dedicated on the fifth anniversary of 9/11, in a ceremony attended by President Bill Clinton, Secretary of the Department of Homeland Security Michael Chertoff, Governor Jon Corzine, Senator Frank Lautenberg, Senator Robert Menendez and family members of World Trade Center victims. Grammy award winner, Leann Rimes, sang the National Anthem and Amazing Grace.

Public Pensions and Our Fiscal Future

WALL STREET JOURNAL/OPINION, 8/27/2010 by Arnold Schwarzenegger - Few Californians in the private sector have $1 million in savings, but that's effectively the retirement account they guarantee to many government employees. [Snip] As former Speaker of the State Assembly and San Francisco Mayor Willie Brown pointed out earlier this year in the San Francisco Chronicle, roughly 80 cents of every government dollar in California goes to employee compensation and benefits. Those costs have been rising fast. Spending on California's state employees over the past decade rose at nearly three times the rate our revenues grew, crowding out programs of great importance to our citizens.Read more at WSJ...

Labor Day Has Become Government Day

HERITAGE.ORG/MORNING BELL, 9/6/2010 - This Labor Day marks a milestone in the history of the U.S. union movement. It is the first Labor Day on which a majority of union members in United States work for the government. In January the Department of Labor reported that union membership in government has overtaken that in the private sector. Three times as many union members work in the Post Office as in the entire domestic auto industry. The face of the union movement is not a worker on the assembly line but a clerk at the DMV. IBD: Choices Ahead For Today's Unions

INVESTORS.COM, 9/3/2010 - Politics: Less than two years ago, everything seemed to be breaking unions' way. Now they're on the defensive. Something went very wrong on the road to the liberals' idea of paradise. ∴ This Labor Day weekend is the official kickoff point for what AFL-CIO President Richard Trumka calls a "massive mobilization" to elect Democrats in November. To hear him tell it, voters face a choice between "a fundamentally different economy that values hard work and a strong middle class" or a return "toward one that puts corporate interests before people." ∴ But the labor movement faces a choice, too. It can keep going down the road to political disaster, or it can wise up and realize that a "fundamentally different economy" is not really what people want. ∴ They want prosperity and jobs, not a government-led war against capitalists [Emphasis added]. And they have a bone or two to pick with the unions themselves. Read more at IBD... Read More......

Wyden Pushing For Oregon Waiver From Health Care Law, Individual Mandate

One of the most innovative voices in the health care debate [according to the Left-leaning Huffington Post], Senator Ron Wyden (D-Ore.), is accelerating the process of exempting his state from some of the national reforms passed under President Barack Obama. ∴ The Oregon Democrat is seeking to take advantage of a provision he helped write into the legislation that allows states to set up their own health care systems as long as they meet minimal requirements established by the Department of Health and Human Services. In a letter to the state's Health Authority office, Wyden announced that he will introduce legislation to accelerate the start date for state waivers from 2017 to 2014, if not earlier for Oregon specifically. Big Labor's Legacy of Violence

TOWNHALL, Michelle Malkin - To mark Labor Day 2010, President Obama will join hands with AFL-CIO President Richard Trumka in Milwaukee and pose as champions of the working class. Bad move. Trumka's organizing record is a shameful reminder of the union movement's violent and corrupt foundations. ∴ The new Obama/AFL-CIO power alliance -- underwritten with $40 million in hard-earned worker dues -- is a midterm shotgun marriage of Beltway brass knuckles and Big Labor brawn. Trumka warmed up his rhetorical muscles this past week with full-frontal attacks on former GOP vice presidential candidate Sarah Palin. He indignantly accused her of "getting close to calling for violence" and suggested that her criticism of Tea Party-bashing labor bosses amounted to "terrorizing" workers.
