Quick Take: Why Britain Voted to Leave the EU

Countries band together to promote trade, defend human rights, protect the environment and repel threats. They sign treaties and join international groups, and each time they do, they agree to give up a bit of independence. That happened in a big way with the creation of the European Union, a free-trade zone and global political force forged from the fractious states of Europe. The question always was, could this extraordinary experiment hold together? Faced with the choice in a June 23 in-or-out referendum, the U.K. voted to leave the bloc it joined in 1973. The way many Brits saw it, the trade-offs no longer serve their interests; they prefer the idea of living outside the EU, as Norway and Switzerland do. They brushed aside the uncertainty that a breakup would cause and voted for what's become known as Brexit.

Door slammed in EU’s face

(Hat tip: KimR) - Hungary will not allow others to dictate “who we must admit into our houses and home country”, Prime Minister Viktor Orbán said in front of Budapest’s National Museum on Tuesday at a state commemoration of Hungary’s anti-Habsburg revolution of 1848/49. He said the first step towards preventing mass migration into Europe is “stopping Brussels”. Hungary would not allow Brussels to “place itself above the law”. The Soros Fallacies On Europe

One World Government: Hedge fund manager and "stateless statesman" George Soros has been shoring up the European Union, advocating for it as the embodiment of his Open Society vision and, now, as a bulwark against a resurgent, menacing Russia. He gets it wrong on every front. The famous left-wing speculator, who made himself a billionaire by shorting the British pound in 1992, ironically is now billing himself as an advocate for Britain by trying to persuade British voters to say "yes" to staying in the European Union in an upcoming referendum.

Syriza’s historic win puts Greece on collision course with Europe

European politics has been plunged into a volatile new era following a historic victory in Greece’s general election by far-left radicals committed to ending years of austerity. --More than five years into the euro crisis that started in Greece in October 2009 and raised questions about the single currency’s survival, Greek voters roundly rejected the savage spending cuts and tax rises imposed by Europe which reduced the country to penury.
