Jon Stewart was exactly right during the open of his Monday show this week: The world really has gone mad. Actually, Monday now looks in retrospect downright tranquil compared to what we’re seeing on our television sets and on our phones this afternoon. A commercial airliner with 295 people on board — including reportedly 23 Americans — are killed after a plane is shot down in Ukraine. Who exactly is responsible (pro-Russian separatists are suspected) has not been confirmed. More importantly, the State Department hasn’t confirmed any Americans were on the flight. As if this wasn’t enough, a few hours later, reports of an Israeli ground offensive being launched in Gaza broke as well.

Did Obama Say Capitalism Doesn’t Work?
4/2/2012 - Raising campaign cash in Maine
on Friday, March 30, Obama said Republicans want to return to economic
policies that would let Wall Street play by its own set of rules and
allow insurance companies to roll back health coverage. "We won't win
the race for new jobs and new businesses and middle-class security if we
cling to this same old, worn-out, tired 'You're on your own' economics
that the other side is peddling," Obama said. "It was tried in the
decades before the Great Depression. It didn't work then. It was tried
in the last decade. It didn't work," he said. "You know, the idea you
would keep on doing the same thing over and over again, even though it's
been proven not to work. That's a sign of madness." Read

Jaffe: Troops feel more pity than respect
The event was a Wall Street gala that raised millions of dollars for homeless veterans in New York City. ✧ Kid Rock sang a ballad about helplessness, frustration and loss. On cue, several hundred soldiers, sailors, airmen and Marines strode into position around him. The black-tie crowd rose to its feet and cheered. ✧ “The servicemen and women were regarded as heroes,” said David Saltzman, who organized the spring fundraiser. ✧ A senior military officer at the gala, also attended by the Joint Chiefs then-chairman, Adm. Mike Mullen, saw the troops’ role differently. ✧ “They were rolled out like some sort of orphan kid,” the officer wrote in an e-mail. “I’m sure the organizers meant well. I know they did. But it wasn’t respect, really. It was pity.” Read more at the Washington Post...

ABC: Obama: If We Lose in 2012, Government Will Tell People ‘You’re on Your Own’
At a million-dollar San Francisco fundraiser today, President Obama warned his recession-battered supporters that if he loses the 2012 election it could herald a new, painful era of self-reliance in America. ✧ “The one thing that we absolutely know for sure is that if we don’t work even harder than we did in 2008, then we’re going to have a government that tells the American people, ‘you are on your own,’” Obama told a crowd of 200 donors over lunch at the W Hotel.
