The gun lobby is often portrayed as a goliath, but in the fight in Nevada over the Background Check Initiative, it might be the underdog. That is, if the campaign to extend background check requirements to private-party gun sales and transfers unfolds like it did in 2014 for a similar measure in Washington state, where the gun lobby was outspent several times over.

Report: Jihadi Bride Passed 3 Visa Background Checks Despite Online Posts About Violent Jihad
Tashfeen Malik, the Pakistani woman who killed 14 people with her husband in San Bernardino earlier this month, openly advocated violent jihad on her social media accounts before coming to the U.S., but government officials approved her fiancee visa anyway, The New York Times reports.

Tim Kaine introduces bill to punish gun owners for failures in the background check system
In what is (hopefully) doomed to be an exercise in pointless, political posturing, Senator Tim Kaine (D – Virginia) has introduced yet another bill designed to discourage people from selling firearms to those legally entitled to purchase them. His bill, ironically named the “Responsible Transfer of Firearms Act,” seeks to make some things illegal which are already completely illegal and to criminalize the use of the National Instant Criminal Background Check System (NICS) if the system (not the private owner) makes a mistake. Should such a bill find its way through Congress it would be disturbing to say the least.

Gun advocates hit three Oregon lawmakers with recall petitions -- warn more could be coming
SALEM -- Gun rights activists troubled by surging legislation meant to expand background checks for gun sales have filed recall petitions against three Oregon lawmakers. And they warn more could be on the way.
On Wednesday, a Hillsboro man submitted paperwork against Sen. Chuck Riley, D-Hillsboro, and Rep. Susan McLain, D-Forest Grove -- both of whom are in their first terms and part of an expanded Democratic majority enabled, in part, by campaign donations from gun-control advocates.
Riley, who narrowly defeated Republican incumbent Bruce Starr, was particularly helped by money from a gun-control committee led by former New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg. His vote was key to helping Senate Bill 941 pass to the House on a 17-13 vote this week. Both McLain and Riley sponsored the bill.

SB 941 closes marijuana-user gun purchase loophole
Sen. Floyd Prozanski (D-Eugene) & Sen. Ginny Burdick (D-Portland) are pushing a bill that will close a loophole for Oregon marijuana users looking to buy firearms. ✧ The bill, SB 941, will expand background checks required for most personal sales of firearms. The bill requires people selling a gun to go to a gun dealer and request a background check on the person they want to sell the gun to. As part of that background check, the person wanting to buy the gun will fill out ATF Form 4473. ✧ Question 11.e in Section A asks “Are you an unlawful user of, or addicted to, marijuana or any depressant, stimulant, narcotic drug, or any other controlled substance?” ✧
If the person wanting to buy the gun is a marijuana user and answers “Yes”, they will be prohibited from buying the gun. --snip-- If the person wanting to buy the gun is a marijuana user and answers “No”, they will be committing a Federal felony.

Colorado Senate Votes to Repeal Expanded Background Checks
On March 25, the Colorado Senate voted to repeal the expanded background checks that Democrats rammed through as part of the draconian gun control package that was implemented on July 1, 2013.
Democrats justified the passage of expanded background checks by pointing to “mass shootings” at the Aurora movie theater and Sandy Hook Elementary School. In both instances, the lawmakers failed to note that federal background checks were already in place and failed to stop either gunman.

Oregon Universal Background Check Bill Hearing Schedule for April Fools Day
Well, Oregonians, are you ready to lose your ability to privately transfer guns? A senate bill under consideration would require you to appear before a gun dealer and go through a background check. How fun would that be? It probably won’t be cheap and it certainly won’t be private. Here’s an email blast we received from the Oregon Firearms Federation:
