Senate Votes to Require Women to Register for the Draft

(Hat tip: KimR) - In the latest and perhaps decisive battle over the role of women in the military, Congress is embroiled in an increasingly intense debate over whether they should have to register for the draft when they turn 18. On Tuesday, the Senate approved an expansive military policy bill that would for the first time require young women to register for the draft. The shift, while fiercely opposed by some conservative lawmakers and interest groups, had surprisingly broad support among Republican leaders and women in both parties.

Twitter abuse - '50% of misogynistic tweets from women'

UK - Half of all misogynistic tweets posted on Twitter come from women, a study suggests. --Over a three-week period, think tank counted the number of uses of two particular words as indicators of misogyny. --It found evidence of large-scale misogyny, with 6,500 unique users targeted by 10,000 abusive tweets in the UK alone. --Twitter boss Jack Dorsey has said that tackling abuse is a priority.

Palestinian wave of violence marked by increased female role

While battling Israel was once a role restricted to Palestinian men and boys, the current wave of violence has seen an unprecedented spike in female involvement. And where the few women who did engage in attacks in the past were typically underprivileged females seeking redemption after being rejected by their families, the attackers are now largely ideological, educated women from supportive homes.

A God Who Hates Women

For the first time, more American women than men hold bachelor's degrees

Since the 1970s, women have outnumbered men at the undergraduate level in the United States. However, according to recent data from the U.S. Census Bureau, it wasn't until last year that the percentage of women with a bachelor's degree (32 percent) surpassed the percentage of men with one (31.9 percent).

56,023,000: Record Number of Women Not in Labor Force

A record 56,023,000 women, age 16 years and over, were not in the labor force in February.  Not only was that a record high, but it’s also the first time the number has exceeded 56 million, according to data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS).  To be counted as “not in the labor force,” according to the BLS, one must not have a job or have looked for one in the past four weeks. In January 2015, there were 55,756,000 women not in the labor force, which means that 267,000 women dropped out of the labor force since then.

Are we seeing a war among women?

LOS ANGELES TIMES - Have you heard? The Republican war on women is over! Well, the “Republican war on women” is over. The trope, if not the actual phenomenon, has joined the ranks of retired political euphemisms. At least according to Republicans. The GOP victories in the midterm elections have been attributed to any number of factors, Obama’s new status as Undecider-in-Chief high among them. But Republicans have been patting themselves on the back especially hard for finally making headway with the group that purportedly loathed them more than any other: that monolith known as women.

In Texas, working-class Democratic heroine Wendy Davis was slaughtered in her bid for governor against Republican Greg Abbott, getting just 45 percent of women’s votes to her opponent’s 54 percent. In Colorado, Democratic Sen. Mark Udall, whose emphasis on abortion rights got him dubbed Mark Uterus, lost his seat to a Republican challenger framed as staunchly pro-life. Here in Southern California, birth control crusader Sandra Fluke, whose career took off after Rush Limbaugh did her the great favor of calling her a slut, ran for a state senate seat and was trounced by a fellow Democrat. Though women’s health wasn’t a major campaign issue, it’s telling that liberal local voters weren’t sufficiently moved by Fluke’s story to choose her over her more seasoned opponent.

Meanwhile, the GOP made women’s history. Mia Love, a Haitian American Mormon from Utah, will become the first black female Republican ever to serve in Congress.

Elise Stefanik, 30, of New York’s 21st district, became the youngest woman of any party to be elected to Congress.


Iowa elected its first female senator, combat veteran Jodi Ernst, who talked in television ads about growing up castrating pigs.

In the up-and-comer category, there was Saira Blair, an 18-year-old college freshman and self-described “pro-gun, pro-life, fiscal conservative” who ran a campaign out of her dorm room and won a seat in the West Virginia House of Delegates. In other words, ladies, it’s time to lay down our arms. Old white men are not coming after our birth control and legislating our bodies. Eighteen-year-old girls are! So shut up, already! Of course, none of this changes the fact that 64 percent of white men voted for Republicans in last week’s elections. Moreover, nearly two-thirds of eligible voters didn’t bother to show up at the polls at all. Maybe that’s because some of them, including women who once believed Republicans were waging a war on them, were busier ranting at and fighting with each other on social media than actually getting involved with the political process. It could be a coincidence, but I can’t help but notice that as the “war on women” recedes, women seem to be fighting a civil war among themselves.

Question affirmative consent on campus and you risk being called a rape apologist. Chuckle at a celebrity’s overzealous plastic surgery or prolific romantic history and you’re a body shamer or slut shamer. Engage in reasoned debate over women’s sexuality, creative expression or place in the world and you’re likely to be schooled by a sisterhood whose members are admirably passionate but somehow unable to get their heads around the idea that people who agree on the big issues can respectfully disagree on lots of smaller ones.

In other words, you’re likely to encounter progressive women who think that all women, especially all progressive ones, should be a monolithic entity — which is even more exasperating than conservative men who think the same thing. Contact Meghan Daum at mdaum@latimescolumnists.com Read More......

August 27: NFRW Public Relations Committee's Survey Results

Many of our NFRW women will attend the Republican convention in Tampa next week as delegates, alternates, guests, and credentialed participants. Excitement mounts as the NFRW Public Relations Committee rolls out the results of the NFRW's nationwide Republican women survey which was conducted between July 1 and August 6.

 Daily we hear the media and others perpetuate stereotypes about Republican women, who we are and what we believe. No comprehensive survey of Republican women had ever been taken to provide data for a substantive response. Thus, the NFRW's Table Talk Survey was born.

While a healthy response was expected, the PR Committee was quite surprised when more than 8,500 Republican women took the time to participate! Republican women from all 50 states and U.S. territories took the survey. Many survey participants are not affiliated with NFRW, which speaks volumes on about the Republican women across this country who want their voices heard. On Monday, August 27, the PR Committee will release an executive summary of the survey results, which addresses these five topics: demographics, policy, problems, perspectives, and elections. Author interviewed Robin Brown of Corvallis, who flew helicopters in Iraq

Robin Brown has finally started adjusting to civilian life. She and her husband, Jason, are working on renovating their third older home, they have a 10-month-old son, Henry, and she works in sales at Benson’s Interiors.

It’s a far cry from piloting a Kiowa Warrior scout attack helicopter for the 82nd Airborne.

Brown was a military brat who attended Fordham University in New York on an Army ROTC scholarship, and went straight into the Army after graduating in 1997. Her whole life has revolved in some way around the military, and having married a military man as well, the idea of life without the Army is a little bit odd.

Recently, Brown relived some of her most dramatic military moments when she read Kirsten Holmstedt’s new book, “Band of Sisters: American Women at War in Iraq.” Brown is one of the two dozen women soldiers interviewed in the book, which has just been released.
